Our Karate Kids!

All BKKU Instructors have undergone Enhanced Criminal Records Bureau ("CRB") checks and are happy to provide details upon request.

Ben Stevens (9) and Kai Passereau (8)

The BKKU provides four specifically developed Junior Programs for the next generation of Kenpo in the UK, Mini Masters, Mighty Masters, Major Masters and Kenpo Cadets! Your children will learn life skills and self defence at the same time, in a safe, fun and family-oriented environment.

Kenpo is great for keeping the kids fit and healthy. It has taught them discipline and helps them concentrate.

Children start Kenpo for many reasons, sometimes its because the parents feel it will be good for them, sometimes its because they are being bullied at school, sometimes its because they’ve been watching too many Jackie Chan films and sometimes its just because they’ve always wanted to do martial arts.

Whatever the reason here at the BKKU we cater for children from all walks of life and through our fun classes and professional instruction help them to increase their self-confidence, self-esteem and fitness and develop positive character traits such as self-discipline, self-control, focus, goal-setting and the importance of team work and unity to stand them in better stead in adulthood.

Joshua has gained confidence at school and it is a great outlet for Trinity's engery and imagintion.

We strongly believe in family values and see our Junior members as part of our extended Kenpo family.  We welcome parents to stay and watch our classes and some of them even end up training themselves to keep up with their children!!

The starting age for Juniors is 4 years old.

Warning to Parents:    You may be called upon to look very silly during the Festive Season when participating in fun games with your children!!!

What do Parents think?

Don't just take our word for it, read what some of our junior students' parents have to say about our children's classes:

"My son has attended Kenpo karate for five years, and I have watched him turn from a nervous shy little boy into a confident and happy young lad, it has taught him so many things, confidence,r espect, that he can achieve anything he puts his mind to, and more than anything self worth. I am so proud of him for his commitment to kenpo, and extremely thankful to his teacher Mr Amrik Singh for the sense of belonging that he instills in all his pupils, kenpo feels more than anything like an extension to our family, and without it I am not sure where we would be. I would recommend Kenpo to all, and hope that it remains part of our family for many years to come, as I am sure it will as my son says he would like to be a Kenpo karate master when he grows up! I am proud to say that we are a part of it, and hope that many more people will read this and see what they are missing out on! Thanks to all at Kenpo and the BKKU!!!"
- Charlotte Holbrook, - Mother of Reece Taylor (2nd Kyu Brown Belt - aged 9)

“Having studied martial arts myself, and having tried other club’s with my son I was very pleased to find the BKKU and Mr Mills’ Kenpo School, which teaches its system as a genuine martial art rather than a sporting exercise. My son loves training and has made rapid progress as a martial artist, but what is more impressive is the sense of respect and responsibility for himself and others, that he has developed and he has learnt to focus on a task, however hard and keep at it until he masters it. He’s certainly learning life skills as well as fighting skills”
- Guy Maughan, - Father of Kai Passereau (purple belt – aged 8)

"Since Starting Kenpo with Mr Singh Cameron has grown in confidence and has helped him overcome his nervousness. It has also helped with his self control and given him a focus that he enjoys."
- Camerons Mother (white Belt aged 8)

“I have found karate very beneficial to Lewis it has improved his self-confidence as he was very shy when he first started karate. Moreover, it has improved his fitness”.
- Mrs P. Wright – mum of Lewis (white belt – aged 5)

“My son Ben has been doing Kenpo since July 2006. He has made many friends, has leant self-discipline and is respectful to all. My son is autistic and his instructors have engaged and included him fully. Fantastic club. Ben never misses a lesson.”
- Anne-Marie Stevens – Mum of BenStevens (Blue belt – aged 9)

“Kenpo is great for keeping the kids fit and healthy. It has taught them discipline and helps them concentrate. It has shown them that practice and perseverance pay off and that some times you have to put in hard work and effort to get what you want, but that it is worth it. Joshua has gained in confidence at school and it is a great outlet for Trinity’s energy and imagination.”
- Mrs Elsom- Mum of Trinity (yellow belt aged 7) and Joshua (blue belt aged 9)

"Caitlins confidence has grown, Kenpo has helped her to mix and take instructions from senior students who are assisting Mr Singh and Mr Dean. It has also taught her to not be quite so self centred when everyone is doing the same thing. Her self discipline has also grown."
- Caitlin Sutherlands Mother (White Belt)

“Our children started Kenpo between the ages of 8-10 years. We wanted them to learn a martial art for self-defence, but have been surprised and pleased at how many other benefits there have been. As they have moved through the grades, they have gained in confidence and self-esteem, as well as earning the respect of their peers.

The club gives them a sense of belonging and has widened their circle of friends. Doing kenpo has improved their fitness generally and this has crossed over into the other sports they do, improving their abilities across the board. They have learnt to concentrate, focus and show commitment. It has kept them occupied and broadened their interests. They have learnt skills that will last them a lifetime. We feel very lucky to have found this club. The Instructors are skilful and committed and teach with humour and patience. The classes are a good balance of discipline and fun.”

"Sam likes the challenge of Kenpo and enjoys learning new and sometimes quite complicated techniques.  He looks forward to training with his friends. They help each other to improve and overcome the many little fears and difficulties each grade brings.  He gets stretched (sometimes literally) and feels he has achieved if he passes a grading."

-Ray Ford - Father of Sam Ford (Junior 3rd Kyu Brown Belt)
